We have developed a colorful, restaurant-specific safety calendar for managers to use at the beginning of each month to train employees on a single focus topic for the month. The calendar runs from January to January, is in both English and Spanish and has several pictures that support the safety topic of the month. Each year the topics are selected by reviewing the claims from the previous year and is based on frequency and severity. Each topic lists 5-6 key points (in English and Spanish) with the photos supporting the topic. The bottom half of the calendar shows the days of the month. Every Monday notes a “safety tip of the week” that supports the topic of the month. We teach the managers to start training the topic on the first day of each month. Each day a different employee is asked to write on that day in the calendar the number of days their restaurant has been injury-free, with the goal to get all employees trained by the 12th day of each month. This training takes from 8-10 minutes to conduct.
Additionally, we have provided a trainer’s guide for the managers that supplies them with background information about the topic. The second page tells them exactly what to say about the topic and what interactive responses to expect from the employees. The third page is the training record where employees sign that they have participated and understand the training they just received. Each Monday managers use the safety tip of the week to engage employees on the monthly topic and how it applies to the work they do.
